100 Years of Art Deco – Back to the Future A Lecture by Mustansir Dalvi

Art Deco Mumbai Trust and Alliance Française de Bombay invite you to celebrate the centenary of the Art Deco style! While Art Deco made up much of Bombay from the 1930s to the 50s, it debuted a decade prior in Paris, at the 1925 International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts. We start the celebrations of the 100th year by winding the clock back to Art Deco’s origins, tracing its beginnings and journey before it arrives in Mumbai to shape this city.

Mustansir Dalvi will present a public lecture as part of 2025 programming of Art Deco Mumbai for the centenary celebrations of the 1925 Paris Exposition next year. As a lead up to the 17th World Congress on Art Deco, which will be hosted in Paris in September/October 2025, Art Deco Mumbai shall commence the year in Mumbai with a lecture initiating attendees to the diverse world of Art Deco.

ADM has dedicated itself to contextualizing the style to Mumbai’s built form. With this session, ADM will open the conversation up wider, exploring how the Style manifests in different fields, geographies, and contexts. What is the enduring legacy of the Exposition that started it all? How has the style developed a different aesthetic language over time and geography? And what is its relevance today?

Professor Dalvi’s lecture will serve as a primer to the Style that changed the aesthetic trajectory of the world.
